History:
The Schipperke
originated in Belgium in the 1600s. Its name translates into "Little
Boatman". They were used as watchdogs on the barges that travelled the
waterways. The breed also became very fashionable in England in the
1880s. The Schipperke was intoduced to America in the early 1900s and
has slowly gained popularity.
Temperament:
Independent and headstrong, this little
dynamo is definitely a bold companion. He
is fond of children and frequently will attach himself to the
children of the family, becoming their loving, loyal and watchful
companion. It is an alert watchdog and
wary of strangers. It can be a bit stubborn and will test a novice
dog-owner's training skills.
Maintenance:
This is a
high-energy dog and requires ample
amounts of mental and physical exercise. The double coat will need weekly
brushing, more during shedding season.

The Schipperke is usually a long-lived
dog. Many have lived to be 16 to 18 years of age. Because of
their long lifespan and little if any illness, the breed is
generally considered one with very few prominent health
problems. |
