History:

The "Little Brushwood Dog" is the smallest and most ancient of the six native Japanese breeds.  The theory is that the word "Shiba" denotes small. So this breed is also know as the Japanese Small-size Dog.  There were 3 main types of Shiba Inu, but after World War II, the breed was almost lost.  The different types were interbred to let the dog survive as one breed. The first Shiba came to the US in 1954 and was recognized by the AKC in 1993.

Temperament:

The Shiba is a headstrong, bold and independent dog. They are hardy and full of self-confidence, always ready for vigorous play.  Kind and trainable, other descriptions include territorial, domineering, alert and reserved with strangers-making it an excellent watchdog.  They can be quite vocal as well.

Maintenance:

The Shiba needs a vigorous daily workout.  Long walks, games in the yard or such. Its double coat needs brushing once or twice per week. They are very clean and easy to house-break.

Weight Range: 20-30 lbs.
Avg. Height: 13.5 - 16.5 in.
AKC Group: Non-Sporting
