History:

Developed in Scotland in the 1800s to hunt fox, badger and vermin.  The West Highland White Terrier originated in Scotland, where they had been bred and maintained for more than 100 years prior to their appearance at dog shows. The first AKC registration was in 1908. Originally registered as the Roseneath Terrier, the name was taken from the Duke of Argyll's place in Dumbartonshire, Scotland. The name was officially changed to West Highland White Terrier in 1909.
It is probable that the Westie and all the terriers of Scotland came from the same stock; the Scotties, Cairns, Dandie Dinmonts, and West Highland Whites are branches from the same tree and its roots.

Temperament:

Curious and cheerful, the Westie always demands to be in the thick of things.  They were bred for going to ground, so digging is natural for these terriers. The Westie is described in the AKC standard as being “possessed of no small amount of self-esteem with a varminty appearance” This is a very self-confident dog! They are a spunky, intelligent and loyal companion. Westies get along fine with well-behaved children, and are very good watchdogs. Remember that the breed was developed to work on its own and does have an independent streak.  

Maintenance:

Short walks a couple times a day will give your Westie the exercise it needs.  The wire coat will require combing 2-3 times weekly.  Professional grooming every three months will keep that "Show Ring" look.
