History:
(Pronounced "Pap-ee-yon").
French for "Butterfly", this dog with its
large ears definitely resembles its name. Originating in the 1500s in
France, the Papillon was a favorite of Louis XIV. At one time, the
Papillon was known as the Squirrel Spaniel because of its plumed tail over
its back. The original Papillons were larger than today's dog.
Temperament:
Bright and perky, gentle and playful, the Papillon is one
of the most obedient and responsive of the toy breeds.
It is friendly towards strangers and
other dogs. They are wonderful with children.
Maintenance:
A daily walk and some fun games are all
the Papillon needs to stay active and alert. As with most toy breeds, it
should be kept inside. The coat requires brushing twice weekly.
