The Sun Conure is
native to eastern South America, mostly north of the Amazon River.
This particular baby bird was born and raised here in North
Carolina.
Hand-fed baby Sun
Conures can be wonderfully loving companions. They are
out-going and affectionate with their owner. This is a
little bird with a big bold personality. And their beautiful
coloring makes them much sought after.
Since Conures are
social animals, they require companionship to be happy and healthy.
Prospective owners must commit the time and attention that these
loving little birds need. two hours of together time would be
the minimum. If they are to be left alone during the day, you can
leave the TV or radio on, but be prepared for what they might pick
up and repeat!
Sun Conures are very
intelligent and playful. They have the ability to mimic and imitate
which is a fun advantage to owning this parrot. They are considered
rather noisy, though, and they do have their boisterous times of the
day -usually in the morning as well as the latter part of the day.
Keep in mind that pet
birds can be a bit messy in their eating habits. Out in the
wild, a bird just drops unwanted food to the forest floor where
other eager animals are waiting. You can help the situation
with seed guards and mats around the cage.
Food:
Sun conures need a
varied diet including lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds and
nuts. A seed mix or pelleted diet can be used as a daily
staple. "Quicko" by Sun Seed is an excellent supplement for any pet
bird.
Housing:
A cage should be as spacious as
possible. The minimum measurements would be 18 x 24 x 24".
The bars should be no more than 1/2" apart. A variety of perches
with differing widths will help 'exercise' their feet.
They love to chew and explore new
things, so supply a variety of toys for this intelligent bird.
They love warm spritz-baths once or twice a week. They love to
roll and play in water. A clean fresh dish of dechlorinated
water should be supplied every day.
