History:
Pronounced “Kaze-Hawnd”. The
Keeshond is one of the family of spitz dogs, although its exact origin is
unknown. In the 1700s, the dog was known as the Barge dog because it was
often kept as a watchdog on the small vessels navigating the Rhine river.
The Keeshond was the favorite mascot of the Holland patriot faction
preceding the French revolution. Unfortunately, the patriots lost out and
the Keeshond almost disappeared as a symbol of political incorrectness. The
breed survived and was recognized by the AKC in 1930.
Temperament: Energetic and
playful, the Keeshond is a very attentive and loving companion. It is an
alert watchdog, but not a guardian- usually friendly to all.
Maintenance:
This is a
lively breed that requires moderate exercise. A good walk on a leash and a
vigorous game can satisfy its needs. The double coat needs brushing once or
twice weekly, and more when shedding. The Keeshond is a long-lived dog-often
up to 12-15 years.
Weight Range: 35 -
40 lbs.
Avg. Height: 17-18 in.
AKC Group: Non-Sporting |
