History:
Around 1865, in Boston, a breeding
between an English Terrier and a Bulldog resulted in a dog named "Hooper's
Judge". This dog was bred to a smaller female and eventually the Boston
Terrier was created. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1893, less than
20 years after the breed was created. The Boston was the most
registered dog in 1915, 1920 and 1930.
Temperament:
Clever and playful, the Boston is
very devoted to its owner. It is usually well-mannered but can be a
bit stubborn. Some do bark quite a bit. Not a barker, however,
Bostons make excellent watch dogs. They take pride in
defending their masters. It can be reserved with
strangers and may be aggressive toward strange dogs.
Maintenance:
Daily exercise is a must with
this breed. They love games and interaction with people. It should not
be kept outdoors. Some Bostons may snore. They cannot tolerate heat
well, and should be kept in moderate temperartures. The coat requires just occasional
brushing to remove dead hairs.
