History:
The Maltese is an ancient breed
originating on the island of Malta. The Maltese is
one of the oldest pet dogs. The breed traces back 28 centuries! It was
originally a larger dog bred to hunt in swamps and woodlands. The breed was
decreased in size and became a favorite lapdog. It was thought that these
dogs were brought back to England by Crusaders returning home from the
Mediterranean. The breed became a favorite of the English aristocracy. Women
carried their coddled pets in baskets and in their sleeves. The American
Kennel Club accepted the Maltese for registration in 1888.
Temperament:
For all his
diminutive size, the Maltese seems to be without fear. He is trusting,
affectionate and among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs. He is
lively and playful as well as vigorous. Despite his size the Maltese is
without fear. The Maltese is a good choice for people who live in small
apartments because of his size, but for the same reason it is not a good
candidate for those with small children, unless the owner can provide
constant supervision. Highly intelligent and good at learning tricks,
Maltese also tend to get along with other pets well. A good watchdog, they
love to romp and play.
Maintenance:
A romp in the yard or a short walk on a
leash is all you need. The beautiful coat requires combing every 1-2 days.
Professional grooming will keep your Maltese looking like the standard.
