Native to the Amazon rainforest, there
are two species of Caiques: the Black-Headed and the White-bellied.
The way to pronounce Caique is "kai-EKE"
Owning a Caique
guarantees that there will be a clown in the family. They are very
playful, always energetic and display the curiousness and enthusiasm
of a child.
Pet Caiques enjoy
mimicing human sounds. Some owners have asserted that their
shrieks can be annoying. But with their high-pitched voices,
they will love to "talk"
Caiques are highly
intelligent birds. It is fairly easy to teach them tricks.
And they can be strong-willed hopping to where they want to go.
Caiques can have
complex personalities, with many ups and downs of emotion. But
unlike other species of parrots who bond with just one person, the
Caique will share his love with the whole family.
They enjoy a variety
of toys, so many different types should be offered. They love
to play with more than one at a time..even while eating.
Food:
Caiques
need a varied diet
including lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. A
seed mix or pelleted diet can be used as a daily staple.
Housing:
A cage should be as spacious as
possible. The minimum measurements would be 24 x 24 x 30".
The bars should be no more than 1/2" apart. A variety of perches
with differing widths will help 'exercise' their feet.
They love to chew and explore new
things, so supply a variety of toys for this intelligent bird.
They love to take baths. A clean fresh dish of dechlorinated
water should be supplied every day.
Everyday will be
an adventure with your Caique!
