History:
Named for the most renowned of British huntsman, Reverend
John Russell, "The Sporting Parson" (1795-1883), whose passion for fox
hunting, hounds, and working terriers is legendary. His first terrier, “Trump”,
is said to be the foundation of Russell's strain of working terriers. The
Parson Russell Terrier was recognized as the Jack Russell Terrier by the AKC
in 1997.
In 2003 the name was officially changed to Parson Russell Terrier.
Probably the most famous
Jack Russell
Terrier is "Eddie" featured on the television show "Frazier"
Jack Russells should be at least 51%
white with solid tan, black or brown markings. The tail should
be set high and carried up. The tail was designed as a handle for
hunters to pull this tenacious hunter out of the fox hole where he
had cornered his prey.
Temperament:
The Jack Russell is the
most "terrier" of all terriers! A true hunter at heart..he
lives to chase, wander and dig. He is very playful and intelligent,
always thriving on action and adventure. He gets along well with
children and strangers, but not always so well with strange dogs.
It should be remembered that this dog is first and
foremost a hunting dog. Its strongest skills are digging, barking, and
following scents.
They are extremely intelligent, and assertive and will
continue to test their limits throughout their life. Continuous
obedience training is a must to keep this ball of energy directed to
positive behaviors.
Bold and friendly,
as well as athletic and clever. At work he is a game hunter, tenacious and courageous.
At home he is playful, exuberant and overwhelmingly affectionate. He is an
independent and energetic terrier and requires his due portion of attention.
Often described as willful, determined and absolutely fearless, they can be
difficult to train and need a firm, terrier-experienced owner. They like to
chase and explore, and should not be trusted around other small animals.
This is a big dog in a little dog’s body. They can climb and jump quite well
so a very secured yard is vital. With the right owner, this dog can really
excel.
Maintenance:
A sturdy and muscular little
dog, the Jack enjoys romping in the
outdoors. He is sensitive to the cold. Occasional brushing of
the short hair is all that is needed.
