History:
Despite its
name, the Australian Shepherd was actually developed in the United States in
the 1800s to work on herding ranches. The Australian Shepherd Club of America was formed in 1957 and
became the largest registry in the U.S. The AKC recognized the breed
in 1993.
Temperament:
A devoted and obedient companion. The
Aussie is bold, alert, confident, smart and responsive. Its many
talents include herding, retrieving, watch-dogging and police work.
Understand
that this breed needs daily vigorous mental and physical stimulation to stay
in top-form. It craves human contact. The breed may be reserved with
strangers and has a protective nature. It may try to herd children and small
animals by nipping.
Maintenance:
Short jogs or play sessions in the
backyard. It's thick coat needs brushing every other day.
