History:
The pug is an ancient breed, miniaturized down
from mastiff breeds in China. The facial wrinkles were an essential
breed characteristic. The "Prince Mark", or vertical wrinkle on the
forehead, bore a resemblance to the Chinese character for "Prince."
The breed made its way to Holland in the
1500s. By 1790, the Pug was in France. Napoleon's wife Josephine
used her Pug to carry messages to Napoleon when she was imprisoned. The
breed was recognized by AKC in 1885.
Temperament:
A playful and friendly lapdog. A
fun-loving blue-blood, the Pug combines dignity and comedy. He is also
described as stubborn, confident and headstrong, but generally eager to
please. He is a natural show-off!
Maintenance:
The Pug requires daily exercise, a
moderate walk on the leash will suffice. He does not do well in heat and
humidity and should not be left outside. His facial wrinkles should be
kept clean to prevent skin infections. His smooth coat requires only
occasional brushing. Be aware that your Pug is prone to wheezing and
snoring.
